The last few months there has been a multitude of breaking stories in the news regarding the immigration crisis at the Arizona/Texas-Mexican border.
While my first reaction was one of frustration and anger at our Presidents inability to do his job in securing the nations border, my thoughts turned one day to compassion.
The other day it was reported that thousands of illegal immigrants were running across the Texan border and that the Texas border patrol was in serious danger of falling. How scary i thought. But even more so the reports went on to say that hundreds of immigrant children were being held in holding cells in Arizona. reports have said numbers as high as 45,000 children.
Now let's be clear. My opinion of our immigration system is this. I believe we have a very good system that, though it is bogged down at times by red tape and bureaucracy, works better than other nations. The reason it looks inefficient in recent years is because the federal government has failed to use and uphold it. This in turn has pushed the issue of amnesty to the forefront of the nations attention.
But back to these kids. These families have sent their kids fleeing violence, gangs and all manner of inhumanity, to America in hopes of a better life. That is not the problem. We have a pathway to legal citizenship that would be effective if it were upheld.
But now these kids are being held in facility in Arizona and the federal government wants to open up another in New Mexico. Further more the states have no state or local power to deport or encourage the legal process, since the 2012 SC ruling on SB1070.
So where does that leave us? My opinion, we need to stop looking at this as a party line issue currently and look at it as a human rights issues. These kids need to see that America is a land of Freedom, even if our highest power in government won't adhere to the laws of the land, and that we do want them in our nation, but through the proper legal channels set up already. I cannot stand seeing anymore pictures of kids in holding cells....no families..no parents...nothing... forgotten... in limbo.
