When was the last time you were asked your views on creation vs. evolution? What was your answer? If you are like 70% of people, you probably flinched. Then you stuttered your way through an absolutely horrendous, unprepared response that completely showed your lack of foresight on the issue.
Do not feel bad. I have been there before as well and have been less than successful in my "In the Beginning" speech. But thankfully we believe in a God of knowledge and second chances! It's time to take that knowledge and second chance. My generation is the most skeptical generation we have ever seen, and our educational systems; public and private are doing very little to reverse this through logical debate.
According to the Barna Group in conjunction with the American Bible Society, 35% of 18-29 year olds believe that the Bible contains everything in it needed for a person to live a meaningful life.
In another study done by the Barna Group, they asked non-Christian millenials to describe the Bible in 1 word. The top 5 words are as follows: Story (50%), Mythology (38%), Symbolic (36%), Fairy Tale (30%), Historical (30%). 27% of this non-Christian group also believe that the Bible is a dangerous book that brings oppression.
These alarming stats are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to millenials. This generation is in desperate search of a source of comfort. And while i believe that change starts in ones own heart and deliberate allowance of Christ love to enter; we have failed to reach them with the Gospel and so they have resorted to cultural and material possessions to fill this void.
Universities, public and private have done very little to stop this decimation of Biblical truth. Public Universities are unwavering in their ideology against Christian values. Sociology and human nature classes depict us as inherently good beings, that can find within us the power to a peaceful life. Private universities and seminaries are becoming less equipped as well. Speaker/writer Dr. Terry Moretenson asked his assistant to contact 50 conservative evangelical seminaries and asked them what they require as far as classes in Genesis.
The results from 36 email responses revealed that only 1/3rd of these were young-earth creationists and they were fairly small seminaries. To break it down further, only 2 of these required a creation/evolution debate course. 3 others had an elective in Genesis; 1 didn't deal with the issue all together. This issue is scary because it plays over into the pastors we have today and those who hope to become pastors.
This truly needs to be reversed. Every Christian should be able to defend a literal truth of Genesis. "Six, 24 hr. days of Creation about 6000 years ago and a global catastrophic Flood."
In an article by Dr. Terry Mortenson published in Answers in Genesis magazine, he shows us that Peter told Christians to be "ready to give a defense of their faith", Paul pressed pastors to teach truth and eliminate error, and Jude pleaded that we defend our faith in the face of falsehoods.
So when was the last time you were asked to defend your faith? Were you able to use the knowledge given to you by a sermon your pastor gave? Are we equipped to defend Genesis in an evolutionized society?
